Choosing the Right Toothbrush

As you've been told time and time again, brushing your teeth is recommended at least twice a day for optimal oral health. When it's time to stop at the store to purchase a new brush, the aisle can be a bit overwhelming - there are many brands, kinds and colors to choose from. So what is the best choice for you?

Size and Shape

When shopping for your new toothbrush, begin by looking at size and shape. The toothbrush you use every day should fit comfortably in your hand and feel natural, like holding a pencil. The length of the handle should be should be long enough to easily reach your back teeth, but not too long that it feels uncomfortable. The heas size is equally important. It should be a size that fits into your mouth comfortably and reaches your back teeth with ease.

You may not know this, but brushes may have a variety of bristles: angled or straight, hard or soft. The design of bristles does not matter as much as using the proper brushing technique, so choose a style that is the most comfortable for you. Knowing the difference between hard and soft bristles, on the other hand, is also important. Hard bristles may damage the surfaces of the teeth and irritate the gums. Soft bristles are usually the safer choice when deciding between hard or soft.

Manual vs. Powered

Both manual and powered toothbrushes are effective at cleaning your teeth, so the decision between the two depends on personal preference. Children may enjoy brushing more with a powered toothbrush, as would those who have trouble using a manual brush.

Whatever you choose, make sure it makes brushing easy and comfortable. Keep up with brushing, flossing and dental visits to ensure optimal oral health.
