5 Things to Eat More of This Holiday

As we have mentioned , some of the treats we devour during the holidays can have negative effects on our teeth. This busy season may also mean you aren't being as thorough with your dental care.

While this list may not quite satisfy your sweet tooth, the following snacks can keep your teeth healthy in the midst of all the holiday chaos:

1. Vegetables with fiber. Kale, spinach, celery and other fibrous veggies are not only rich in vitamins and nutrients that are good for your body, they also clean your teeth while eating. They also keep saliva flow high, neutralizing acids that eat away at tooth enamel.

2. Green and black tea. A study in 2009 showed that those who consumed high amounts of green tea had the best gum health. Tea contains an antioxidant (polyphenol) that reduces bacteria and acid in the mouth, preventing cavities and tooth decay.

3. Strawberries. Did you know that strawberries actually have a tooth-whitening element that reverses discoloration? These juicy fruits are also full of vitamin C, which is crucial for oral health.

4. Water. Water is a miracle worker for just about everything! It washes away left over debris from food, and its added fluoride helps to fight tooth decay. It also keeps you hydrated, preventing dry mouth.

5. Nuts. These snacks contain a wide variety of nutrients, including calcium which keeps teeth strong. They also increase saliva flow which keeps bacteria away.
